Why 2013 was such an incredible year

This post celebrates the end of my first year as a professional wedding photographer. It’s been a whirlwind year, and on the 30th December the icing on the cake was achieving my ultimate goal: being featured on Rock n Roll Bride!

I’ve shot an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding in a muddy field, a Doctor Who wedding in Yorkshire and a wedding in a leather factory in the Netherlands. I’ve cried at speeches, played with sparklers and done a newlywed shoot in the middle of Oxford Circus on the busiest Christmas shopping evening of the year. And yesterday I was honoured to photograph a secret wedding with just four people in attendance. It was an intimate affair and gave us loads of time to get creative with photos – and despite it being in the midst of Storm Number Three, the sun popped out and we got to hit the beach!

I’ve also taken part in several workshops (of varying quality) – from a class in a basement in London taught in Russian (seriously?!) to the inspirational Emma Case’s Welcome Home workshop and the incredible Photography Farm. I have also met so many incredible and supportive people in the wedding photography community and I want to thank them all for being so brilliant. These workshops and people have helped me work out who I am and why I love what I do.

I discovered that I love photographing weddings not only because they’re exciting, fun and full of surprises – but also because I am preserving memories for friends and families to treasure for the rest of their lives. It’s so important to have photographs that document your life – the love, laughter, tears, hugs, stories, jokes, the terrible fashion choices made, silly faces pulled, the fleeting moments that you forget in an instant.

It’s been an amazing year and I thank all of my couples for allowing me to share their special day with me. It’s been an honour to photograph every one.

And so I look forward to 2014. It starts with an intimate ceremony of just two guests, and ends (so far) with a beach wedding in Florida. I’ve got weddings in castles, vineyards and priories. I’m even shooting one that is the exact wedding I would have – to the last detail… Every couple I’ve booked is amazing, I love them, and I can’t wait to share their wedding days with each and every one of them.

Here’s a round up in pictures of the top moments this year, from the most recent, all the way to my first ever wedding.

Here’s to an equally exciting 2014!
